I liked the HP, even with it’s flaws. The first one I noticed was the heat it put out. There were times I was sure I could de-ice a car in a Montana winter just by working on the computer within the car.
The other issue surfaced later. The hinges, to be specific, the left side hinge is weak. The screw holding the case tends to back out and strip. After that happens it becomes a case of “use with care” and start thinking about, as in ASAP getting a replacement.
I nursed the HP for almost a year, it still works, though the “d” key tends to sleep first thing in the morning. Do computers get arthritis?
So on Black Friday, coming back from a Physical Therapy appointment, we stopped at Best Buy to look over the new laptops. The one thing that was important to me was a solid state drive. They run cool, no more roasted upper thigh.
The sales clerk took me to over to look at some Macs. He assured me my Windows files would transfer. “No problem. Look, open Pages, then save it as a Word file, likes this,” moves cursor around hits save and then save as… Okay that seemed easy enough. A few questions and answers later, I bought a Mac Book Air.
My nephew said it was bold move for someone who has used a Windows based PC for, well, almost 30 years.
Saturday morning my blood pressure was, well, a tad high. I needed Air Traffic Control clearance. Transferring the files was anything but easy. I took it back to Best Buy, and handed over both my computers to the Geek Squad and let them deal with it. Easy right? You don’t me very well do you? Still people were telling me to hang with it, I would come to love it. Okay.
The sales clerk was unaware that you had to have Office for Mac installed in order to save your old Office files. It was on sale, so I took the hit. BUT, yeah I know, who didn’t see that coming right? But it did not include Outlook.
The Squad got it back to me Sunday, right before the Colts game. I was on the phone with the Squad who could not help without a service contract, then on the phone with Comcast. My email came in but would not send. I still had to go back that evening to have problems resolved. And I kept going back, Monday and Tuesday. Today I it got back again. But could I find my files I have been working on? Seriously, do I really need to ask? And still people would say hang in there you’ll learn to love it.
So I trudged back to Best Buy an hour later. I finally found someone who sat down with me and we went over each issue in detail.
Do I love it? Lets just say for the first time since last Saturday, I don’t hate it. I hard Mac 2016 for Dummies helps. I do not take that as an insult.
Bold move or insane? The jury is still out, but I’m hoping for bold.
