I have attempted to avoid spoilers.
The books are an extension of the classic H. G. Wells tail, The Time Machine.
Mike Arsuaga begins with, 802701 A.D.: (Weena’s Account of H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine) (A Sequel to H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine: An Invention)
Weena, tells of her life in the weeks before the arrival of the Time Traveler. She expresses her dreams and fears in a mix of simplicity of the child like Eloi and after the Time Traveler’s, arrival, some of his sophistication.
Weena lives with one foot in the world of her birth and the other foot in a world she sees through the eyes of the person she views her savior and of her people. She also lives in a world all of us passed through in our early teens, wanting acceptance, stability and understanding. Each of the three-world fight for her attention.
Her world swings from food, to play, to breeding and to fear. The phases of the Moon are life and death. She is 13 and she is 7. She knows her life is limited. The Time Traveler is her giver of hope and focus and to ideas the Eloi have no concepts for.
Come Find Me
In the original story, Wells seems to have killed Weena in the great fire the Time Traveler started in the hope to save himself and Ween from the Morlocks. But alas dear sweet Weena lived to tell the story of the departure of the Time Traveler. She is now 90 years old, as she tells her story to a young American reporter. It is a story of love and loss, of being a child, an adolescent, and a woman living in a time she fears, in a time she doesn’t understand and in times where she finds her life and herself. Weena is more than she was, more than is and is surprised at who she becomes.
Mike Arsuaga’s love of the original story has resulted telling Weena’s story as if H. G. Wells had written these books himself. I may say, I think Mike is in love with Weena, and I will boldly say any reader of these books, myself included will fall in love with her too.
Do yourself a favor and read all the books. Then do Mike a huge favor by writing reviews on every book selling site you can, and by telling anyone who will listen, buy them, read them, and review them.
